Adult Women Students

Women Back in School (WBiS)

In spring 2008, Adult Learner and Veteran Services received a grant from the Mildred Arnold Foundation to pilot a transition program for adult women who are returning to school to complete their undergraduate degree. Women who have participated in this workshop have shared the following:

"Very good resources provided!"

"I feel better about coming here."

"I feel that the ALVS office is more accessible now that I've made contact."

"I know I have somewhere I can go for help or guidance. I feel like I can discus and approach different areas of my life that I haven't thought about in a long time."

Of the 3600 undergraduate, CSU students who are 23 years of age and older, approximately 1400 are women. And of those 1400, approximately 245 are aged 25 or older.  Our office would like to support your transition to being a student by connecting you to the excellent resources available to you on campus.

 The purpose of the Women Back in School (WBiS) program is to:

·         assist you in your transition to being a student;

·         to inform you of the on-campus resources that will facilitate your academic success;

·         to visit, tour and meet staff in various on-campus offices;

·         to build a support network with other students, with the comprehensive goal to increase retention for adult women students and support them to graduation.

WBiS includes:

·         A group that meets once a week for one hour for the first seven weeks of the semester (focus on womens experience);

·         A library orientation at the start of the semester (1 ½ hours);

·         An opportunity to be paired with an upper class female student;

·         Visits to various offices on campus to learn about their services and programs and meet their staff;

·         The Discover Your Strengths program utilizing the Clifton Strengthsfinder on-line assessment;

·         A lounge in Lory Student Center available to all NTS with complimentary coffee, hot cocoa, and tea;

·         A workshop on Becoming a Master Student;

·         Information about scholarships available to women;

·         An opportunity to win a CSU Bookstore $200 gift certificate (must participate in the full day workshop, the library orientation and four of the six group meetings to be entered in the drawing).

WBiS will be offered at start of fall and spring semesters. If you’d like to meet with other women over the age of 25 to discuss campus life, please contact Jan Rastall at jan.rastall@colostate.edu or stop by Room 195, Lory Student Center, north end, plaza level, and she’ll be more than happy to talk to you!
