The History of ALVS

In the early 1970’s, adult women who had returned to campus to pursue a degree were turning to the Office of Women’s Programs and Studies (WPS) for support. WPS responded by creating a series of workshops for re-entry women. These noon-time workshops became what is now known as the Women at Noon series.

As the need for services grew, the Office of Student Relations began to coordinate orientations for non-traditional students. These services found their way to the University Counseling Center and took on the name of Non-Traditional Student Office. In the early 1990’s the office moved to the Division of Continuing Education. A peer mentoring program was established as well as Pinnacle Honor Society for Non-traditional Students.

In 1995, the office was combined with Off-Campus Student Services and organizationally moved to the Division of Student Affairs. In the spring 2009, the Bernard Osher Foundation awarded CSU with a $50,000 grant to provide tuition scholarships to select students over the age of 25 year. The scholarship is administered through the office. In the spring of 2009, the A.C.E./Wal-mart Foundation awarded CSU with $100,000 to start the first national veteran honor society for veterans in the country and enhance current veteran services.

On July 1, 2009, Off-Campus Student Services and Resources for Adult Learners became two distinct offices sharing a common space in Room 195, Lory Student Center. Resources for Adult Learners became Adult Learner and Veteran Services and Off-Campus Student Services became Off-Campus Life. ALVS welcomes all students so drop by soon! For more information call (970) 491-3977 or email alvs_staff@mail.colostate.edu.
