Definition of Adult Learner
An adult leaner is referred to by many names, including non-traditional student, adult student, student over traditional age, and older, wiser learner, as well as Jim, Katherine, Allison, and Mark among many others. But what is an adult learner? An adult learner is someone who is:
· 23 years of age or older (Colorado State choronological benchmark)
· Working full or part time
· Married, partnered, or single
· With or without children of all ages
· Attending school full or part-time, possibly after a signifcant break
· any student who feels they do not fit the typical 18-22 year-old student profile
Other characteristics of adult learners that might differ from those of the typical college student include:
Highly Motivated, Self-directed and Goal Oriented
Juggles multiple responsibilities such as, but not limited to, personal relationships, work, academics, children, and finances, all of which demand time and attention
Skilled Problem solvers: prior experience in work, relationships, and parenting have strengthened their problem solving skills
Concerns about fitting in the college environment may result in feelings of isolation, anxiety, self-doubt and fear
Needs of Adult Learners
We recognize that adult learners have needs that differ from those students who attend college right out of high school. These needs include, but are not limited to, flexibility with their schedule due to sick children, work requirements, other family needs; facilities that accommodate infant care such as changing tables in restrooms, private areas for breastfeeding; assistance locating resources to support their academic success; and accessible childcare.
